For refugees who don’t speak English or only having a limited understanding, the transition into a new community can be even harder.
Difficulties communicating with those around them, can be incredibly isolating and create massive obstacles in being able to re-start their lives. So, your direct help can make a huge difference. Below, are links to different organisations and websites that are looking for volunteers to help refugees with English.

There are 3 courses to choose from:
a) ESOL and Basic Computer Skills
b) Family ESOL (15 weeks)
c) Family ESOL (20 weeks)

Learn basic English to help you communicate with teachers and other parents about your child’s school life. Learn to use Zoom to participate in online learning.

CLEAR offer a range of ESOL courses and qualifications, as well as some shorter Adult Learning courses, to help develop skills, confidence, employability and knowledge of living, working and volunteering in the UK. If you are interested, you will need to complete an enquiry form and attend an initial assessment.
We offer English courses for asylum seekers, refugees, migrants and their family members at the following levels: Pre-entry level, Entry level 1, Entry level 2, Entry level 3. Our main courses run for 32 weeks.
Regular attendance is very important at CLEAR as places are limited and demand is high. We are able to provide a limited number of creche places for babies and pre-school children.

ESOL Skills for Life qualifications support speakers of other languages based within the UK to develop their English language skills for work, further learning or everyday life.
Entry 1 Tues and Thurs 12.30 -2.30

Level 1 Mon and Wed 12.30 -2,30
Level 2 Mon and Wed 12.30- 2.30
If you meet the requirement* these classes are free and will be conducted face-to-face. You will have home tasks to complete each lesson. You will have 22 classes each term and each class will last for 2 hours in 2 lessons each week. There will be 11 weeks each term. A member of staff speaks Russian and Ukrainian.

WEA runs classes in two places in Southampton
There will be a new ESOL for Work course starting on May 11th, 2022 and running for 8 weeks. Applicants would need to come in a week before for assessment.

This cafe is for people whose first language is not English. We welcome people from any country and any cultural background.
Every Monday during school term time, 1:30-2:30 pm in the lounge
We start with tea, coffee and snacks this is a time to say hello and chat together. Each week we have a topic to discuss and sometimes there are games or activities around that topic. We just have lots of conversations in a relaxed environment. There are always native English speakers who are there to help people learn English and become more confident. Just come along at the right time and join in.

Ol Digital Institute (Basic to Advanced)

As part of our vision of Learning without Limits, we have carefully designed a range of online courses for refugees and displaced people in the UK. We recognise our role as education providers for those displaced by conflict. Our response to this is to offer free courses delivered fully online. Our courses are 3-hour lessons per week (Mon, Wed and Fri) for 4 weeks. Each week is a standalone topic, so students are able to join a course every Monday. On completion, all students will receive a certificate of completion
There are 2 courses:
English for Culture
This course is designed for students at beginner to intermediate levels, and covers such as life in the UK, daily tasks and services, traditions and meanings, cultural awareness, media analysis and discussion and debate.
English for Business
This is aimed at intermediate to upper-intermediate students and is designed to prepare you for working life. Topics include 21st-century skills, digital marketing, corporate responsibility and interview/negotiation techniques.
